Mental Health First Aiders

As many of you will be coming to the office for the first time in a while, even the first time overall for some, we want to introduce to you our Mental Health First Aiders in each newsletter so you can recognise faces and know who to go to if you need any help.

Amy Jones

Mental health problems affect our lives in many different ways, sadly 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem of some kind each year.  During my career, I have crossed paths with a number of colleagues who have been experiencing mental health issues and who have sought support.  It is an area close to my heart, both through personal experiences but also witnessing the impact that poor mental health has had on close friends and family.

When Tony Wade approached me and asked if I would be interested in becoming a mental health first aider, there was no need to consider this – the answer was always going to be yes! I was motivated by the opportunity to be able to gain the knowledge, skills and tools that would help me to support others in the best way that I can.  A big part of the role is supporting colleagues during periods of crisis or when they are experiencing the effects of poor mental health, but other important aspects include promoting good mental health, raising awareness and reducing stigma.  I think it is fantastic that ChargePoint have committed and invested in the growth of the mental health first aid team and that this now branches out across the organisation.  In providing access to this network of support, our colleagues are within easy reach of someone to talk to.  I feel honoured to be able to help where I can and grateful for the opportunity.

Sometimes all it takes is a quick ‘how are you?’, please don’t forget to ask twice!

Faye Burns

Before embarking on my career change, I worked in children’s residential care homes. Here I saw first-hand the traumatic effects of mental health, this ranged from self-harm, acts to carry out suicide, anxiety and drug taking to alleviate their emotional distress. I saw first-hand how without the correct support, care and treatment an individual’s mental health can make a person a shell of their former self. I decided to take up the opportunity to become a Mental Health First Aider because you never know what someone else is going through.

I think as humans we get so wrapped up in our own lives, we forget each passer-by is living a life as vivid and as complex as our own. We all have different struggles, we all carry grief, anger, sadness, stress, and numerous other concerns around with us. Sometimes the most helpful thing you can do is to be that non-judgemental listener and listen to someone while they talk about their problems, letting them speak without fear and then offer the right support.

Being a trained mental health first aider has allowed me to become a point of contact for my colleagues, family, friends and even allows myself to be mindful of my own mental health. I hope my skills and knowledge helps to support and change the lives of others in their time of need.

Adam Bunyard

To be honest, I’ve never considered myself particularly suitable to be a first aider of any kind, but the opportunity came up and on the spur of the moment I said yes. In hindsight I’m glad I did because mental health is rarely discussed and it was interesting to learn about a wide range of illnesses and how, with professional help, many conditions are treatable. For me it’s not about helping or being helped in any way, is about being supportive to each other. You for me and me for you. Thanks.

Laura Schumann

I wanted to become a MH First Aider so I could understand more about how to help those who are struggling.

Becoming a MH First Aider has helped me to develop my non-judgmental listening skills, and learn how everyone has both good and bad mental health days.

I believe daily exercise is great for a positive mind set.

I would like everyone to know that I am always open for a chat about anything at all, and will always make time for a good chin wag!
