Role Purpose

The Design Engineer is responsible for customising and adapting product designs to meet customer specifications, ensuring efficient fulfilment of sales orders.

The role involves managing Engineering Change Notices (ECNs) and Engineering Change Controls (ECCs), maintaining technical documentation, and ensuring compliance with relevant directives and standards.

Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams, the Design Engineer plays a key role in delivering high-quality, compliant products while driving continuous improvement in design and manufacturing processes.

Main Duties

General:

  • Lead and participate in team meetings, recording necessary actions and being responsible for any follow up required
  • Visit customers and suppliers both in the UK and overseas for the purpose of technical and warranty support or part manufacturing investigations (occasional)
  • Resolves and/or escalates issues in a timely fashion
  • Liaise with cross-functional teams including sales, production, quality, and procurement to streamline order fulfilment and design processes.
  • Identify opportunities for cost reduction, design optimization, and process efficiency improvements.
  • Participate in design reviews and failure analysis to enhance product reliability and performance.

Sales Order Design & Customisation:

  • Interpret customer specifications and modify existing designs to meet order requirements.
  • Work closely with sales and production teams to ensure design feasibility and manufacturability.
  • Create and update 2D/3D CAD models and drawings to support customer orders.
  • Review and sign off part/assembly/GA drawings/technical documentation and designs Engineering Change Management (ECNs/ECCs):
  • Initiate, review, and implement Engineering Change Notifications (ECNs) and Engineering Change Concessions (ECCs) to improve product designs and manufacturing processes.
  • Ensure all design modifications are accurately documented and communicated to relevant stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with quality and compliance teams to validate design changes. Quality:
  • Develop and maintain technical files to support compliance with relevant directives (e.g., CE Marking, UKCA, ATEX, ISO 9001, Machinery Directive, Pressure Equipment Directive).
  • Ensure product documentation, including risk assessments, test reports, and declarations of conformity, is up to date and audit-ready.
  • Work with regulatory teams to ensure product compliance with national and international standards.
  • Identify the cause of and propose solutions to quality concerns/issues

  • Ability to work effectively within a team and the ability to work using his/her own initiative

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • 2-3 years within a Design based engineering role
  • Additional certifications in project management are advantageous.
